Q: Are
you a massage therapist? How do you recommend cleaning the stones after each
client? My girls use a wash tub and scrub; I have heard some say soaking in
water with tea tree oil is good. Any advice you have would be great.
A:
Cleaning
the Stones:
To cleanse the massage stones after use they should be boiled in a deep
pan of water (sea or river water is preferable when possible) for 5 to 10
minutes. You can also use regular
tap water and add sea salt to it for boiling the stones clean.
The stones should then be allowed to cool to room temperature before
they are used again. Do NOT
re-use stones right away, as they will be too hot to use right after the
cleansing boiling process. Set
them out to cool down between massages, or maybe set them in the sunshine to
recharge.
Some
people suggest using tea tree oil and/or alcohol to clean the stones; but
there is the possibility that the stones absorb and retain these substances.
Also, they will retain the odor of tea tree and/or alcohol, and are
thereby rendered less effective for aromatherapy and even potentially harmful
to those who have fragrance & chemical sensitivities and reactions.
However,
DO be sure to clean your rocks in some fashion because for example, if you are
using them on people’s feet (which often harbor fungus, etc.) you definitely
don’t want to be passing fungi around!
This information is written in accordance with the procedures and recommendations of several Licensed Massage Therapists (LMT’s) in my local area who use these sea stones in their massage practices. I have consulted with them extensively in order to prepare this comprehensive information for use. I also consult with them regularly regarding the composition of my massage stone sets.

Subject:
Your Massage Stones - How Are They Working out for you?
Hi,
I
am just touching base with folks who have recently purchased massage stones from
me to say hello, and that I hope all is going well for you working with
your new massage stones.
Please
remember that I am here at any time, now or in the future, should you need
additional information of any kind.
Do
not forget to treat yourself to some hot stones also. Here's a couple of
ideas: I often keep a couple of nice warm stones beneath my feet as I am
sitting here working at the computer which keeps me nice and warm in the cold
weather, and also affords the opportunity to do some foot reflexology work on
myself by using the edges of the stones to press in the specific areas needing
work. Or try cold stones under your feet to cool you down in the hot
summer heat, it definitely helps!
Another
thing I do while working long hours at the computer is to place an oblong
cold stone under my wrists for support and soothing when my wrists are sore
and tired. This feels so good and it helps to relieve the tenderness
that can develop.
Thanks
again for your purchase. Let me know if I can harvest additional
stones for you of any shape or size at any time in the future. I am always
glad to do custom orders of any kind.

Response:
Just a quick note to let you
know the seastones I purchased from you are fantastic! They have enhanced
my massage business and brought it to a new level. I think of how helpful
you were when I first got them and had so many questions and I always smile.
Thanks, Barrielyn!

Response:
Hello, great
to hear from you! I am working with the stones and figuring out which
stones work best for what. I love your ideas, thank you for sharing them.
Feedback from the clients I have used the stones on has been very positive.
I still have a little way to go to being totally comfortable with them.
Friday, I was working with a client and I dropped one of the toe-size stones.
The carpet in my massage room is navy blue and with the low lighting, I was
groping around on the floor for the stone all the while maintaining my
professional demeaner. Ha Ha. It's been fun and I am pleased to have
some new "tools" in my toolbox.

Question:
I was reading your instructions on your web site and wondering....what do You use to clean your stones? How do you see more than one client per day if you have to heat them up and cool them down? How long does it usually take for them to cool to room temp. for use again? When do the stones sit directly on the skin? Do you ever put the stones on the table on either side of the spine and have the client lie on them? Aprox. how many do you use per massage?
thank you,
Answer:
Hi _____,
Thanks so much for your questions. One thing you might find helpful is to read the section on my website called "frequently asked questions" as many of the questions you have asked have been asked by others and it is in this part of my website where I have actual email questions and answers available for everybody to read through. Several of your questions will be answered here.
Questions that won't however are answered here as follows. Yes, you can use them by laying them on the table and having the person lay on top of them. You need large thin stones for this, hard to find, but not impossible. Very good technique to use with the right stones.
If you are a practioner who is going to have clients all day long you will need to get a large set or a couple of sets to work with. You can keep a crock pot or kettle going throughout your massages and reheat stones used in the beginning of the massage towards the end of the massage and so forth. So you can use groupings from your larger sets from each individual session and thereby stretch out the number of stones you have to work with. How many for each session depends on too many factors to know for sure, like the size of the person, the kinds of therapy the person needs, whether they want face stones, whether they want toe stones, etc.
Also with how long it takes to heat up and cool down in between and so forth, all varies quite a bit depending on how hot the stones are being heated and with what method of heating etc. So I am sorry not to give you more precise info here, but there are many factors to consider and not just any one answer per se.
Again, with practice you will soon get to know your stones and how many you will need per client and how hot you want them and how long you will need them to settle after the cleansing boils and so forth. You just develop a sense of knowing these things fairly rapidly with practice, you will see.
Also the longer you work with the stones the more you will develop your own unique routine. There are many good references to study but the learning comes of course with the actual hands-on and you will grow to be more comfortable working with the stones each time you use them and you will decide for yourself what you think works best. In other words there are many techniques but not just any one way that is correct -- it is something that each person develops their own style for, almost like a dance or something.
Also if you have not read the other tab on my website called "Contra-indications and Instructions" please do read that when you can as you will find here the actual instructions I include with each set and also you will find again find the info about cleaning the stones etc.
I hope the above info will be helpful to you. let me know if you have any trouble accessing my website, and also let me know what additional questions you may have at any time now or in the future. I am very happy to try to help in whatever way I can.

Question:
I've
heard that stones for massage have to be heated in an oven at a low
temperature for several hours to get the air bubbles out (I think this is
called curing them) BEFORE they can be routinely safely used for hot stone
massage. If this "curing" is not done initially, there is a
risk that a
stone could blow up or split in the crock pot or (I guess) even on the
person. Do you know anything about this procedure and do you do this to
the
stones you sell?
Your dog is so cute!!!!
Thank you very much for your
help.
Answer:
Hi
and thanks for your question, sorry for the delay in my
response -- I have recently completed a bit of current research on the
subject of heating stones in the oven, and this is what I believe to be
true. It is somewhat in contradiction to what you are indicating, but
similar, and I thank you for bringing up the subject.
Before I get into that though I was wondering if you would be able to tell
me where you found the info you are talking about? I do want to be sure
I
am including the most accurate info I can with the stones so that everybody
is as safe as possible, so let me know if you can direct me to a particular
source or whatever, that would be very helpful.
I have most recently actually decided to start recommending against heating
the stones in the oven for just this reason and I am so glad you bring it
up. I have done recent research which indicates that it depends on the
mineral composition of the particular stone as to whether or not it might
blow up in the oven, and because it seems to be something you would actually
need to know a whole lot more about, I have decided that heating the stones
in the oven is an unsafe method to recommend generally speaking. And I
especially do not recommend at any time heating the stones in a microwave
oven, definitely not.
I have only found research indicating rocks blowing up in ovens if certain
ratios of minerals and compounds were present within the stone. I have
not
found research regarding stones blowing up in crock pots or other water
heating methods. Please let me know if you can provide further info
about
this, as it has not been a problem for anybody I have worked with yet.
Nor
I have yet received reports back about cracking stones or anything like
that. So far I have not heard of any of these problems using the water
heating method.
My recommendations for treatment of a new set of unused, right from the
beach massage stones is this: Wash them in a warm/hot water bath with a
stiff brush to scrub them clean. I do not use any kind of soap, as
anything
you use on the stone will be absorbed and so I limit what I put on them, and
do not use soap, just hot water and a stiff brush.
Once they have been scrubbed, I then remove them from the water, and place
them out on a towel and begin rubbing each stone with a generous amount of
an unscented high quality massage oil -- (I recommend a non-nut oil so as to
avoid any irritation to anybody who has nut oil allergies and reactions) --
quite a bit on each stone, and then let them set for awhile and soak in the
oil. Then heat them in water in your crock pot or kettle to the
appropriate
temperature (using a cooking thermometer to be sure of what the water
temperature is) -- and they are ready to be used for a massage.
Many people will incorporate even more of a personal dedication or ritual
for the new stones to impart to them the great desire to do healing work and
so forth, so it can be very personal or not, however you wish.
At any rate, please let me know what you think of these ideas and if I can
be of further help in any way. Thanks for your inquiry. I look
forward to
hearing from you again.
Response:
Thank you so much for your thorough and caring answer. In answer to your
question to me..... I am a massage student and we used stones in
class. I
asked one of our instructors where the stones come from and if there was any
preparation they needed before they could be used. She told me that she
understood that the stones should be cured. So that is where I got that
information. She is an excellent instructor, but her information wasn't
necessarily the Bible or anything. Another therapist who advocates
LaStone
training just told me that the stones should be heated in a turkey roaster
rather than a water heating method. Anyway, my research continues.
I
really like your stones and I so appreciate your help. Thank you SO, SO
much for all the information you have given me

Pregnancy
and Hot Stone Massage -- Contraindicated
From what I have found I do think that
pregnancy is a contraindication for hot stone massage. Heat is
contraindicative because of the extreme vascular expansion and changes that
take place all throughout pregnancy to the mother's body in order to
accomodate the baby's growth. Also, I think that most women feel heat a
lot more especially during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, so they may just not be
comfortable with a heat treatment then as well. But at any rate, I have
added pregnancy as a contraindication on my website and I think for the most
part from what I can tell one should avoid hot stone massage during pregnancy.
Let me know what you think about this, and if you have other or different info
etc. Thanks!

Response:
I do not know of a specific video to recommend, but of course if you find one
that would certainly be helpful also. I think one of the main things I
have found is that there is no one way to do stone massage, not any one way
that is "right" -- and that with some practice everybody seems to
develop their own style and routine for working with the stones in many
different settings actually. I am so glad you were able to receive a
stone massage, it is so soothing and surely gives you a better idea of what
you are aiming for. Also you are exactly correct that many people use a
modified swedish approach. I have heard of so many variations on this
now though that there are just too many different approaches to mention them
all. Some people work just along the meridian lines, so folks study
"la stone" therapy and other energy "adjusting/aligning"
therapies and so do energy alignment work as well as massage with the
stones. The symmetricalness of the stones I harvest lends itself well to
such work also.
And
when I work with the stones for myself or on others I always get this very
ancient feeling that wells up inside me and states loud and clear to me that
stones have always been used for healing since the beginning of their being
stones, and I feel most closely connected to the stones by using the most
primary heating methods, i.e., fire (heat), water, sea salt -- simple, direct,
natural. I know it sounds crazy but I just love the stones, but then I
have always been a rock hound as they say!

There
Are Quartz Crystal Formations in these Stones!
…. Also, I have given you a close up of the largest stone in the batch. I want you to observe where you see tan/whitish little patches on the rocks surface. When you receive your stones you will want to take them outside on a sunny day and look at these little tan spots. You will see that there are actual quartz crystaline formations inside these stones which are just barely visible in these little tan patches. Also, these little patches do NOT effect how smooth the stones are overall and the stones are not as granular as they appear in photos. They are actually very very smooth. But I love for people to look at them in the sunshine and realize that these stones are basalt and quart crystal, and that's why I think they are so special for healing work and also why they hold and impart the heat so well.
Next Day:
They're here, they're here!! The UPS man came right before supper and I ran to the door. It took him several minutes to get out of the truck, and then he hefted them up on his shoulder and I could tell they were heavy …
They are beautiful!! I can't wait for tomorrow (hopefully the sun will shine so I can take them outside and play). Tonight they go on my altar to be dedicated to the healing work. Thanks sooo much for all your help, and for finding these magnificent stones for me.

More About Quartz Crystals!
…. Gotta run but wanted you to know I was thinking about you and hoping for your stones to arrive very soon. Yes, they really do have crystal formations in them. But take them outside and look at them in the sunshine BEFORE treating them with massage oil in order to see the crystal formation most clearly. Using a magnifying glass in the sunlight is a real treat! No I do not sell crystals per se, although I have occasionally found crystal clusters on the beaches where I get the stones, that get washed down from the mountains during the winter storms, into a local creek which empties out onto the beach at a certain place I know of. They are just small clusters but they are SO special to me because they are crystals I have found.
When you receive your stones, take some
outside on a sunny day and look at them. You will see that on some of the
stones there are very small little patches on the stones where you can see
quartz crystaline formations. The sunlight will pick up on the crystal
formations and you will begin to realize what the stones are made of and why
they hold heat and healing potential so well -- they are formed from a
crystaline quartz/glass-like volcanic rock/lava zillions of years later now all
washed smooth by the elements of earth all this time! I just love these
rocks, I really do. But then I AM kind of a rock hound, always have been!
Thank you for being a participant in helping others to feel better and live
happier lives. Thanks for your very kind messages. I hope we can
stay in touch.

Question:
Hi Barrielyn,
I am excitedly looking forward to receiving my stones! I am a physical
therapist, but normally only work with children - the stones are for using with
my friends, and hopefully with me (is it possible to use them on yourself?
I hope so, I get so much muscle tension during my long days.) Your prompt
replies are very much appreciated.
Thanks again
***************************************************************************************************************************
Reply:
Yes, for sure you can use them on your friends and on yourself. The
children may find them soothing and healing also, just to lay with some warm
stones nestled close around and/or on you is comforting and restful even without
massage or PT.
I
use them on myself all the time, even when I am working at the computer I will
put some under my feet and under my wrists, sometimes cold ones under my wrists.
In the summer cold stones anywhere to cool me down. I lay cool (not too
cold, just cool enough) stones on my face, neck, top of head when I have
headaches and/or feel stressed out ... and then there is the possibility of your
own trigger point therapy etc.
A
few other ideas can be found in the "frequently asked questions"
section on my website also (www.seastonesmassage.com
) -- truly, I believe that hot and cold stones have been used probably
forever as a source of heat/cooling, soothing, healing, no limit to the
possibilities actually if you see what I mean.
Again, thanks so much for your purchase. Please let me know at any time if there is any information I can provide you with regarding the stones etc.
***************************************************************************************************************************
Some of the stones in the photos appear brownish/tan because they are straight from the beach and still have sand on them. This is one way you will know they are freshly gathered and have not been sitting around in plastic storage bags or dark musty warehouses somewhere for a long time.
The stones are not washed or oiled prior to shipping for several reasons:
For one thing, if they were oiled you would really have no way whatsoever to know for sure whether or not they were "used" stones.
If the stones have been pre-oiled and then sit around in hot shipping boxes, in warehouses, in hot UPS or USPS trucks during transport, etc., that oil on the stones is going to go rancid from the heat and confinement, so you will be delivered a set of rancid smelling, largely contaminated stones -- So unfortunately pre-oiling has a huge potential to instead become like a pitrie dish for germs and rancidity to grow. Not a good idea at all really.
The stones I sell have flecks of quartzite and pyrite in them which are most visible prior to the stones being oiled. So I like to recommend that when you first receive your stones, prior to cleaning and oiling them, take them outside (and if you have a magnifying glass even better) and study the tiny little "tan patches" in the sunlight and you will discover amazing beautiful crystalline worlds right there on the surface of many of the stones. These tiny small patches do NOT interfere in any way with how smooth the stones are overall, and the little patches are not nearly as visible once the stones are oiled the first time. So this is something you would want to do prior to oiling the stones. I highly recommend doing this. It will provide you an even deeper appreciation of the healing potential of these stones.
Another reason not to pre-oil stones is that some folks have allergies to certain types of massage oils (nut derivatives especially, i.e., coconut oil, almond oil, etc.) so it is preferable not to oil them ahead of time until you know who will be using them and whether or not they have sensitivities to certain oils. Some folks also have negative reactions to scents and aromas which might be present in certain massage oils, so that is to be considered as well prior to oiling them. I recommend using a non-scented, non-nut oil based massage oil when you do oil them the first time. Any scents in the oil will remain with the stones for a very long time thereafter, so I recommend that if you wish to use aromas, perhaps you consider using aromas through other avenues of delivery rather than directly on the stones, and let the stones remain unscented.
Some stone massage traditions especially from Asian countries do Not oil the stones at all -- they rather feel that the just ever so slightly textured surface of the stones, if handled correctly, will increase circulation and toxin release better if Not oiled, by allowing slightly more resistance on the skin surface, and more exfoliation -- so they simply do not use oil with their method of stone massage, so they definitely would not want pre-oiled stones.
Some folks will oil the smaller "working" stones, but not oil the larger heat and weight placement stones. So again, here is a preference folks develop on their own if given the chance of receiving stones straight from the beach.
Most people will want to handle and get to know their stones and prepare them for use for themselves. It gives one the opportunity to fully examine and get to know the stones, and it gives you a beginning of handling the stones and becoming familiar with what they feel like when they are cold, hot, wet, oiled, and so forth -- which are the crucial and most important things to become familiar with prior to beginning a stone massage on a recipient. Many people will have their own little ritual or welcoming for the stones into their practice as well, so by providing very freshly gathered stones directly from the beach to you, you will be receiving the most natural and "nature" charged stones available.
It will become important to sometimes set
your stones out in the elements/weather/sunshine/moonlight, and let them
rest and renew their energy fields in what ever kind of climate and
weather you live and do massage in. The more you handle and work
with the stones, and the more they are renewed and acclimated to your
environment, the more closely tied you will be to them as an essential
part of the therapies you will have to offer. The stones can afford
profound comforting results for the fortunate people receiving stone
therapy.

Q: What do you recommend
as "non-nut derivative massage oils?"
A:
